National document prepared on the development of medicinal plants

TEHRAN – A national document has been prepared to define perspectives, macro-policies and technological development strategies in the field of medicinal plants, IRIB reported on Wednesday.

In it, the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology is responsible for developing policies, coordinating, monitoring, preparing and formulating operational plans, directing and monitoring interactions between the public and private sectors, and the provision of material and spiritual support to science. , information, etc.

Around 30,000 plant species have been identified worldwide, with Iran’s share of around 8,000, which is more than all of the species found in Europe. The document aims to achieve “20% of the country’s medicine market value through medicinal plants and natural products”, “20% of the country’s veterinary medicine market value” and “to increase the export of medicinal plants and herbal products among the top 10 countries in the world”, “3% share of scientific production in the field of medicinal plants”.

By combining the above plans, a comprehensive roadmap for the implementation of the document, which includes 360 separate operational plans, has been prepared and compiled.

According to statistics, about 70% of people in the world consume medicinal plants and medicinal plants.

The global industry has a large market in the world and forecasts indicate that by 2050 the export value of this industry will reach $5 trillion.

In Iran, the area cultivated with medicinal plants has reached more than 250,000 hectares, according to the latest statistics released by the Vice President for Science and Technology.

Other measures in this area include increasing the number of knowledge-based and creative enterprises to 700, increasing health centers to 60, and producing more than 5,000 herbal products.

Persian traditional medicine

Iranian traditional medicine is one of the oldest forms of traditional medicine. It is based on the concept of the four senses of humor: phlegm (Balgham), blood (Dam), yellow bile (Safra’) and black bile (Sauda’). The concept of the four senses of humor is based on the teachings of Rhazes and Avicenna in an elaborate medical system.

Iranian traditional medicine has a strong focus on prioritizing health maintenance and disease prevention over treatment.

Currently, about 2,300 species of medicinal plants have been identified in the country, which accounts for one-third of the medicines used in human societies, the share of global trade in these products is about 124 billion dollars, and the share of l Iran is $570 million, or just 0.5% of the total.

The per capita consumption of medicinal plants in Iran is about one kilogram of dried plants, i.e. 83,000 tons of medicinal plants worth 1.2 trillion rials (about $4 million ) are consumed in the country, while in Europe this amount is 900 grams, and in the United States is 2.5 kilograms.
